San Diego State track and field head coach Shelia Burrell has announced the schedule and participating teams for the 38th annual Aztec Track and Field Invitational. The three-day meet, which will take place from March 24-26, 2016 at the Aztrack on the SDSU Sports Deck, will once again feature some of the top collegiate teams and athletes in the country. The Aztec Invitational will also include open, invitational, master, Paralympic and high school competition.

The meet kicks off Thursday, March 24 with the first day of the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon. On Friday, the hammer throw and open javelin throw will be held on the UC San Diego campus in nearby La Jolla, while the open competition and the final day of the multi-events will take place at SDSU. Friday evening, meanwhile, is the distance carnival, which will also include a USA Track and Field (USATF) sanctioned masters mile as well as a National Federation of the State High School Associations (NFHS) sanctioned high school mile. The invitational and high school sections will wrap up the annual meet on Saturday.

“Our objective for this meet is to be an athlete and coach friendly season opener with quality competition, ” Burrell said. “Last year, the Brazilian Olympic team put on quite a show and set several meet records. Being an Olympic year, we expect some excellent competition and world-leading marks once again.”

Numerous teams are scheduled to compete in the 2016 Aztec Invitational, including Wisconsin, Brigham Young, Air Force, Sacramento State, UC Santa Barbara and Utah Valley. Additionally, many of the area’s universities, junior colleges and high schools are expected to join the competition.

“Our meet is a great way to kick off the 2016 outdoor track and field season, ” Burrell said. “We always schedule our meet to be the weekend right after the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships so that everyone is ready to hit the oval running.”
